CF Frizzell obviously did her research on the time period, setting, and feel of the Civil War and her fictional portrayal of life and death on the battlefield. Frizzell’s writing is superb and I felt I was right there in the thick of the historical battles. The author weaves the history and romance of Coop, the Union soldier, and Sophie, the army medical aide, in a very special way. Frizzell writes endearing main and secondary characters with specific strengths, flaws, and struggles. I would love to see Measure of Devotion made into a movie! I thought this book really captured the feelings of loving someone from a distance and holding onto those feelings during the worst of times. I loved the natural depiction of “Coop” ; the author did not over explain or give reasons why she would be more comfortable living as a man/what it was to want another women- she just let it happen naturally and it felt right. I liked how the societal pressure to marry a man instead wasn’t the forefront of the story.The author clearly spent time crafting the battle field and political climate of the time. It was truly wonderful to read a war story from the perspective of the women who served during this time - both who secretly fought and served as nurses - as so many of the stories of women are often over looked in history.
