Book Footsteps in the Dark: An M/M Mystery Romance Anthology Review :

I do love me a good anthology. It’s like an excellent buffet – a little bit of this, a little bit of that, old favorites and a chance to try something you’ve never had before. And Footsteps in the Dark is a literary buffet. I jumped all over this book because of longtime, favorite authors and I was introduced to some new-to-me authors. I LOVED it! I also loved it because of how long it was, 929 pages, (I like big books, I cannot lie.)This collection of m/m mysteries runs the gamut of tropes. And although they are short story mysteries, none of them felt like they were rushed to a conclusion. The eight authors do their craft justice. I was particularly grateful to author Dal Maclean for including the Scottish Gaelic glossary. I honestly loved all the stories but a few stuck with me for several days - Twelve Seconds by Meg Perry, Stranger in the House by Josh Lanyon, Pepper the Crime Lab by Z.A. Maxfield and Lights, Camera, Murder by CS Poe. A definite and enthusiastic recommendation from me.
I bought this anthology for MacLean and Lanyon, and their stories were definitely the headliners for me, but there were a lot of other good tales packed into this nice long omnibus. Each of the short stories is a solid length - not ficlets, but real stories (albeit short) spanning a variety of sub-genres within m/m romantic suspense.EntrĂ©e to Murder, Nicole Kimberling - One of my favorites in this anthology, and a pleasant surprise, since I’m not familiar with Kimberling. This story is more on the cozy end of the mystery spectrum, featuring Chef and restaurant owner Drew Allison and Police Deputy “Big Mac” MacKenzie investigating a dead body that turns up in the basement of Drew’s restaurant. Lightly witty writing, a great POV voice, and very well-drawn secondary characters (Evelyn for the win!) really elevated this one for me. The only downside was that it ended kind of abruptly after the ‘whodunit’ was revealed. The anthology intro indicated that this was the first of a new series, though, so hopefully some of the intriguing hints about Mac’s background will be explored more in future installments. I’d definitely sign up to read more Mac and Drew! - 4.5 starsTwelve Seconds, Meg Perry - An intriguing and different type mystery, as space reporter Justin Harris and Air Force Special Agent Greg Marcotte (“it’s like Air Force NCIS” he explains) investigate a mysterious rocket explosion and a dead body found in an alligator. Yikes! Unfortunately, I didn’t like the story as much as I liked the set up - fairly prosaic and tell-not-show writing without any real tensions between the MCs, whose romantic arc is basically ‘we’re into each other and so we start dating.’ Not a bad story, but it didn’t grab me or compel me to check back in for further installments in what is also apparently the beginning of a new series. - 3 starsReality Bites, S.C. Wynne - I was a little concerned that neither Detective Cabot Decker nor reality TV producer Jax Thornburn seem suuuuper upset that a contestant has been mauled to death by a tiger on the set of Dax’s reality-TV show. They seem much more interested in sniping at each other and checking each other out (again...dead body...mauled by a tiger...right there.) In fact, a lot of things felt off about the policing in this one (not that I’m an expert). Wouldn’t a death on a set like this automatically be investigated as a homicide? And would there genuinely only be one cameraman on duty for a mega-reality TV show? I’m the end, I just really didn’t like either of the MCs or the story. Meh. - Low 3 starsBlind Man’s Buff, L.B. Gregg - This is the one entry in the anthology that is more of a suspense story than a mystery. Teachers Tommy Cline and Jonah Theroux are part of a group of friends who let loose on the weekend playing urban warrior gaming. They’ve snuck into a local abandoned mall for a game of capture the flag (and, in Tommy’s case, to hopefully find the right time to make a move on his crush Jonah) when a bound captive crashes into their party, and suddenly they’re on the run from a psycho. From the premise, I was excited about this one, but I wanted this to be grittier and scarier than it really turned out to be. I was anticipating something more like Kelley Armstrong’s The Masked Truth (maybe unfair to compare this to one of my favorite mistresses of adrenaline) and wound up not feeling the tension or really feeling connected to the characters or the menace from the psychotic killer. Perhaps this was a storyline that needed more than a short story to develop? Either way, not bad, but not very satisfying, either. - 3 stars.A Country for Old Men, Dal MacLean - One of the reasons I bought this anthology was for MacLean. I’ve been obsessed with this author’s two books - which feature a lot of gritty, high-angst romantic longing strung tautly across elaborate and twisty plots - and I wanted to see how she’d adapt that style to a short story format. Well the plot was a little less twisty (although no less well constructed) but the angsty longing was still everything I could want. In fact, it was insanely good. Set on the Isle of Lewis in the Scottish Hebrides, this story about policeman Calum Macleod and his self-imposed exile from his own truths is beautifully written, layered, and deeply emotional. The case here involves a murder and an ancient chessman, while the story intertwines history, and island traditions, and language, and Calum’s own helplessly fixed ideas of what he can and cannot have and be. One side mystery involves someone sending Calum historic letters, and those letters. OOF, the letters. Man, at one point near the end of this I was outright bawling. The ending feels slightly abbreviated, maybe, but that is the only small flaw in this, to me. Truly a haunting, satisfying short story that I’ll absolutely be re-reading. - 5 enthusiastic stars.Pepper the Crime Lab, Z. A. Maxwell - This one has a bit of a feel of a modern country house party murder, set in an LA apartment complex full of colorful personalities/potential suspects and their dogs. Chef Lonnie Boudreaux has just moved into the apartment building when he finds his neighbor stabbed, with his own Chef knife. He winds up entangled with former cop Rick Garcia and young, rambunctious Lab dog Pepper as the suspects and crimes mount. Fun vibe to this one, and cute dogs! (Content warning for some doggy trauma, but all of the dogs are happy and good in the end) - 4 starsLights, Camera, Murder, C.S. Poe - I’ve read and didn’t really like Poe’s Snow & Winter series, but this short story offering is quite good. Private Investigator Rory Byrne goes undercover on the set of TV show to figure out who stole a script from the director. Rory is an irascible perpetual loner, but he clicks with rising star Marion Roosevelt. Marion is a bit of a blank slate, character-wise - filling the sweet ‘damsel in distress’ role - but the pairing of him and Rory is engaging nonetheless. The behind the scenes TV stuff is fun and seems well-researched. A few instances of cartoonishly broad characters and plot (basically what turned me off of S&W) but overall a fun story. - 4 starsStranger in the House, Josh Lanyon - I’m a really big Josh Lanyon fan, and this story feels like vintage Lanyon - a stand-alone along the lines of Don’t Look Back or Ghost of a Chance. In this offering, art teacher Miles Tuesday is surprised and delighted to find out that his godmother has left him her mansion in Montreal. When he gets there, though, there are mysterious doings afoot, possibly involving Linley Palmer his godmother’s son and his own former crush. I always think it’s a smart choice in a short story to have the couple be previously acquainted and it works well here, giving the two a solid past history from which to snipe and investigate. My only quibble with this story is that it’s too short! - 4.5 starsOverall a great anthology, with a nice variety of stories, some solid entries from new-to-me authors, and a stellar offering from MacLean.
